Moggiona
The village of Moggiona lies 700 metres above sea level in the Casentino, the beautiful and unspoilt upper valley of the River Arno.
Moggiona is a woodcraft centre, with a number of craft firms making wooden furniture and articles using wood from the surrounding forests.
The area around Moggiona was designated an Italian national park in 1991, because of its outstanding natural beauty. It includes a forest reserve with many attractive walks. Four kilometres above the village is the monastery of Camaldoli, founded in the 12th century.
Restaurants
Moggiona has two excellent restaurants, both within easy walking distance of the cottage:
- Il Cedro, run by the Tassini family, serves superb food including acqua cotta, tortelli di patate (delicious pasta squares filled with a potato filling), faraona in marsala (guinea-fowl in marsala wine), cinghiale in umido (wild boar stew) and various recipes with rabbit (coniglio). The restaurant was recently recommended in the Guardian and has had excellent reviews in Veronelli and Michelin
- I Tre Baroni offers a more modern take on Tuscan cuisine, but still prepared using fresh local ingredients
